3 Things Your Footwear Could Be Saying About You

by Bojana Graus

Your footwear says more about you than you might think. In fact, shoes can be used to judge a person's personality. Research has shown that around 90 percent of a person's personality can be told through their footwear alone, so that lends the question: What does your footwear say about you?

Your Shoes Can Show Your Age

One of the first things shoes can show a person is your age. Are you wearing a shoe that was trendy in the early 2000s? You might be showing your reluctance to let go of the era. Have you decided to stick to comfortable, yet far from trendy, shoes? You could be pushing into your elder years and want to make sure your feet stay comfortable instead of fashionable.

Your Shoes Can Show Your Social Class

Very obviously, the way your shoes look can show your social class. If you wear brand new, high-end Brooks Brothers loafers, you certainly have thousands to spend on footwear. You likely have a good job and a stable income. On the other hand, if you're wearing worn out tennis shoes or dress shoes that have lost their shine, you might be middle class and just making ends meet.

Your Shoes Can Show Your Personality Traits

Probably most interesting is that shoes can show your personality very quickly to others around you. Bright, colorful, and unusual styles show a confident and eccentric personality, while classic styles show you're willing to conform and fit in. Fancy footwear that has an uncomfortable appearance might show that you're interested in maintaining your image and care about what people around you think of you. Shoes that are well worn and practical may show you're beyond caring what people think and are ready to be yourself without following trends. For example, a man wearing work boots in his 30s or 40s is likely a blue-collar worker; he's not afraid to work hard, and comfort and protection is the purpose of shoes. For someone looking at that individual, the person could observe that this shoe-wearer may be financially stable and ready to settle down, no longer worrying about what people think of them or keeping up with the crowd.

These are just a few things you can learn from what the people around you wear and from what you wear. Take a look at your shoe closet and make sure yours say what you think they should about you. If you're looking to buy new shoes, check out a shoe store like Finley Shoe Store.

About Me

Finding Appropriate Attire

For years, I worked for a company that didn't care much about what I showed up in for work. I would wear really casual clothing, such as a tank top and a pair of cut off shorts. Unfortunately, once I got a better job, my new employer was less-than-enthused about my choice of duds. She explained that they were trying to make the customers feel comfortable and improve the store culture and asked that I wear more professional attire. I started shopping for items that would look neutral, and I was able to find some pieces that I looked great in. Check out this blog to learn more about finding appropriate attire.
