3 Strategies For Saving Money On Your Wardrobe

by Bojana Graus

Whether you're shopping for your professional wardrobe or just for fun, it's always a good idea to find ways to save money on clothes. You probably already know to shop the sales and look online for great deals that you can't find in the stores, but what are some other strategies you can use to save money on clothes? Take a look at some great ideas that will have you dressed to the nines for less.

Make an Inventory of Your Current Wardrobe

Before you know what you need, you need to know what you already have. That way, you can shop for items that go with the clothes that you already own. You don't want to buy a great pair of shoes on sale, only to find that they don't go with any outfit you already own. Then you've either wasted money on the shoes, or you have to buy a whole new outfit to wear with them.

When you know what you already have in your closet, you can focus on filling in the blanks in your current wardrobe instead of buying random items that you may or may not be able to match up. Take a quick look through your clothes before you start shopping and make a note of what you're missing. If you're shopping online from home, take a quick look and see if you have anything to wear with that great top you just found on sale. Taking those few extra minutes can save you a lot of cash.

Shop Out of Season

Buy your swimwear in December and your winter coat in June. Out-of-season clothes are often priced far below in-season clothes because retailers need to get rid of them to make space.

This is one area where shopping online can be a real help. Physical stores have limited space – they can only hold onto out-of-season stock for so long, and often you'll have trouble finding the size or style you want on what is leftover in the store. But a trendy online boutique is a different story – if it's somewhere in their warehouse, they can offer it online. You'll have a much greater range of out-of-season options when you're shopping online, but you'll still get better prices than you would on in-season options. Win-win!

Consider Tailoring When Necessary

If you're in the habit of buying clothes a size smaller than you need in an effort to motivate yourself to diet, now is the time to stop. You're more likely to wind up with clothes that you just can't squeeze into. Instead, buy clothes in the size that you're wearing now, and have them tailored to fit if you lose that last ten pounds you're working on. Chances are that the tailoring will be cheaper than replacing clothes that don't fit.

Tailoring can also be a solution when you find that perfect dress on clearance at a price you can afford, but it's out of stock in your size. Instead of buying a more expensive outfit, buy the next size up and have it tailored to fit. You'll almost certainly save money as long as you have an affordable tailor.

You can wear stylish clothes that look great without going broke. Some smart shopping strategies are all that you need to look good and save money at the same time.

About Me

Finding Appropriate Attire

For years, I worked for a company that didn't care much about what I showed up in for work. I would wear really casual clothing, such as a tank top and a pair of cut off shorts. Unfortunately, once I got a better job, my new employer was less-than-enthused about my choice of duds. She explained that they were trying to make the customers feel comfortable and improve the store culture and asked that I wear more professional attire. I started shopping for items that would look neutral, and I was able to find some pieces that I looked great in. Check out this blog to learn more about finding appropriate attire.
